Women’s Health- It’s All Connected

Hormonal health is as important as diet and exercise when it comes to overall health. Dr. Brown specializes in hormone balancing to treat a variety of complaints.  Optimizing hormones is not only for menopausal women but also menstruating women and women seeking to get pregnant.

Think you may have a hormonal imbalance? These common symptoms may indicate it is worth further investigation.

  • Hot flashes and/or night sweats
  • Weight gain and bloating
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Decreased libido
  • Hair loss
  • Mood swings, forgetfulness, foggy brain
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Breast tenderness
  • Painful menses
  • Migraine headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety/panic
  • Depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Emotional fragility
  • Abnormal hair growth
  • PMS
  • Missed or irregular cycles, infertility, recurrent miscarriages
  • Fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts

If you are experiencing any of the signs and symptoms mentioned above, there is safe and effective treatment available. Therapies include lifestyle modification, supplements, herbs, and/or bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

Estrogen and Progesterone are not the only hormones to blame for these symptoms. For example, the stress hormone cortisol also plays a role in metabolic and immune function alterations. The thyroid, adrenals, and ovaries must all be in balance and if one is over or under-producing it will naturally cause changes in the other endocrine glands.

Both men and women experience hormonal declines and changes through life. For women, the changes can begin as early as the mid-30s but more commonly in 40’s and 50’s. An onset of perimenopause can be rapid with varying symptoms from worsening PMS to hot flashes. Men experience a much more insidious decline and have their own version of menopause, called andropause which may result in reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and/or fatigue.
If symptoms are mild, they can be managed with lifestyle changes and herbal support. When more severe, hormone replacement therapy may be necessary to restore a quality of life.

Why Bioidentical Hormones

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) provides specifically designed hormones that are molecularly identical to those that naturally occur in the human body. The hormones originate from a plant source and are then compounded into identical forms of natural estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Testing and personalized treatment is key

Testing is done on each patient taking any form of BHRT. Testing is repeated annually. Hormone prescriptions are customized for each patient in order to eliminate symptoms at the lowest dosage.
Hormones are fabulous for some women and may not be appropriate for others. The ‘one-size-fits-all’ model is incongruent with naturopathic medicine and bioidentical hormone replacement. Dr. Brown individualizes hormone dosing based on patient health history, serum hormone levels, patient goals, risk prevention, and patient symptoms.

Are bioidentical hormones safe?

Bioidentical hormone replacement is, theoretically, safer than estrogens made from horse urine or synthetic progestins. Bioidentical progesterone has been shown in studies to be much safer than synthetic progestins. Bioidentical estrogen is a growth hormone in the body and may have adverse effects on uterine and breast tissue, especially if not balanced with progesterone. Estrogen replacement is not advised for patients at high risk for stroke or breast cancer but is currently being studied at low doses for the prevention of strokes.

Can everyone take BHRT?

At this time, it is not recommended for women who have or had breast cancer, stroke or clotting disorders. It is also not advised for women who have a familial history or genetic disposition of these. In addition, BHRT is not given to women who have been postmenopausal for greater than 10 years.
